The Urdu novelist Nazir Ahmad wrote Taubat un Nasuh, 'The Repentance of Nasuh', in Delhi in 1874. The film transports this text to the cobbled back alleys of Hackney. This transposition is not as unlikely as first seems. Nazir Ahmad wrote of the social horrors of the 19th Century city, Delhi, in a way parallel to Dickens in London.
